Continuing with their experimentation of molded forms which comfortably cradle the body, Ray and Charles Eames developed a number of molded plastic chairs. These were the first plastic chairs to be mass produced. Keeping true to their design values of comfort, the plastic is molded in one piece with a high and somewhat flexible back and “waterfall” edges which softens the feel of the edge of the plastic. Again highlighting the materials used, the plastic itself is front and center, and as is so ergonomically designed that it is not in need of further cushioning since the organic form both cradles the body as well as has a bit of give for comfort. The use of modern materials and technology did not stop at just the plastic. The Eameses also experimented with bent and welded wire forms for the bases of the chairs. This created the instantly-recognizable geometric chair base.
